Bolin was born in Sioux City, Iowa, on August 1, 1951. He began playing guitar at the age of six, and by the time he was a teenager, he was already playing in local bands.

In 1976, Bolin joined the Billy Cobham Band, and he toured with the band for the next two years. He also recorded two albums with the band, Spectrum and Inner Conflicts.

In 1978, Bolin formed his own band, Tommy Bolin and Friends. The band released one album, Survivor, before Bolin died of a drug overdose on December 4, 1976.

Bolin was only 25 years old when he died, but he left behind a legacy of music that continues to inspire and amaze. He was a true guitar virtuoso, and his playing was a gift to the world.
