Early Life and Career

Ray Brown was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on October 13, 1926. He began playing the bass at an early age, and by the time he was a teenager, he was already performing professionally. In 1944, Brown joined the Dizzy Gillespie big band, and he quickly became one of the most sought-after bassists in jazz.

In 1951, Brown formed his own trio with pianist Oscar Peterson and guitarist Herb Ellis. The trio became one of the most popular jazz groups of the 1950s and 1960s, and they recorded a number of classic albums. Brown also played with a number of other jazz greats, including Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, and John Coltrane.
