Patel was born on October 31, 1875, in Nadiad, Gujarat. He came from a humble background and worked his way up through the ranks of the Congress. He was a close associate of Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru, but he was also a pragmatist who was willing to compromise to achieve his goals.
