The Early Years
The UTMB was founded in 1897 by a group of students who wanted to add some excitement to the football games. The band's first performance was at a game against Vanderbilt University. The band was a hit, and it quickly became a regular part of the football game experience at UT.
In the early years, the UTMB was a small band, with only about 30 members. The band's repertoire was also limited, consisting mostly of traditional marches and fight songs. However, the band's enthusiasm and spirit more than made up for its lack of size and experience.
The Golden Age
The UTMB entered its golden age in the 1920s, under the direction of bandmaster George F.Briegel. Briegel was a gifted musician and conductor, and he quickly raised the band's standards to new heights. Under Briegel's leadership, the UTMB became one of the most respected and admired marching bands in the country.
During the golden age, the UTMB performed at some of the most prestigious events in the country, including the Rose Bowl and the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. The band also toured extensively, performing in cities across the United States and Europe.
The Modern Era
The UTMB continued to thrive in the modern era, under the leadership of a succession of talented bandmasters. In the 1960s, the band adopted a more contemporary style, incorporating elements of jazz and rock into its repertoire. The band also began to perform more complex and challenging formations.
In the 1990s, the UTMB became one of the first marching bands in the country to use computer-generated music. This allowed the band to create more complex and sophisticated arrangements.
The Pride of the Southland
Today, the UTMB is known as the "Pride of the Southland." The band is composed of over 300 students from all majors and walks of life. The band performs at all home football games, as well as at select away games and other events. The UTMB is also a regular participant in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
The UTMB is more than just a marching band. It is a symbol of the University of Tennessee and the state of Tennessee. The band's performances are a source of pride and inspiration for students, alumni, and fans alike.
