The Narrow Door: A Memoir of Friendship That Will Leave You in Tears
The Narrow Door is a memoir by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Michael Perry that tells the story of his unlikely friendship with a homeless man named John. Perry, a successful writer living in a comfortable home with his wife and children, first meets John when the latter shows up at his doorstep one cold night. Despite their vastly different backgrounds, the two men form a deep bond that will span the next two decades.
Perry's prose is both beautiful and heartbreaking as he recounts their friendship. He writes about the long walks they took together, the meals they shared, and the stories they told each other. He also writes about the poverty and addiction that John struggles with, and the ways in which Perry tries to help his friend. Ultimately, The Narrow Door is a story about the power of human connection, even when it is difficult or imperfect.

The book has been praised by critics for its honesty, compassion, and insight. In a review for the New York Times, Dwight Garner called it "a small masterpiece" that is "as precise as a short story and as capacious as a novel." The book has also been a commercial success, selling over one million copies worldwide.
If you are looking for a book that will make you think, feel, and see the world in a new way, then The Narrow Door is a must-read. It is a book that will stay with you long after you finish it.
The Long and Winding Road to The Narrow Door
The idea for The Narrow Door came to Perry in the mid-1990s, when he was living in northern California. He had just finished his first novel, Truck: A Love Story, and was struggling to find his next project. One day, he was driving home from a reading when he saw a homeless man standing on the side of the road. The man was holding a sign that said, "Will work for food."
Perry pulled over and offered the man a ride. The man's name was John, and he told Perry his story. He had been living on the streets for several years, and he struggled with addiction and mental illness. Perry was moved by John's story, and he began to visit him regularly.
Over time, Perry and John became friends. Perry would often take John to lunch, or to see a movie. He would also help John with his appointments, and he would try to help him find housing. John's life was not easy, but he was grateful for Perry's friendship. He knew that Perry cared about him, and that he would always be there for him.
In 2002, Perry and his family moved to Portland, Oregon. He stayed in touch with John, but he did not see him as often as he had before. In 2006, Perry received a call from John's social worker. John had been diagnosed with cancer, and he was not expected to live much longer.
Perry immediately flew to California to see his friend. John was weak and frail, but he was still the same kind and gentle man that Perry had always known. They spent several hours talking and laughing together. Perry knew that this would be their last visit.
John died a few weeks later. Perry was heartbroken, but he was also grateful for the time that they had spent together. He knew that he would never forget his friend, and that he would always cherish the memories of their friendship.
The Narrow Door is a testament to the power of human connection. It is a story about the love and friendship that can exist between two people from very different worlds. It is a story that will make you laugh, cry, and think about the meaning of life.
If you are looking for a book that will stay with you long after you finish it, then The Narrow Door is a must-read.
