Pullman was born in New York State in 1831. He started his career as a cabinetmaker, but he soon realized that there was a fortune to be made in the railroad industry. In 1858, he patented his first sleeping car, which featured comfortable beds and private compartments. The Pullman car was an instant success, and it quickly became the standard for luxury travel.
The Pullman Company grew rapidly in the late 1800s. By 1894, the company owned over 2,000 sleeping cars and employed over 10,000 workers. Pullman also built a model town for his workers in the South Side of Chicago. The town, which was named Pullman, featured spacious homes, a school, a church, and a library. However, the town was also a company town, and the workers were expected to live by Pullman's rules.
In 1894, the Pullman workers went on strike. The strike lasted for four months and it shut down the Pullman Company. The strike was eventually broken by federal troops, but it was a major victory for the labor movement. The strike also led to the creation of the Pullman National Monument.
The Pullman National Monument is a testament to the city's industrial past and a reminder of the Pullman Strike of 1894. The monument includes the Pullman factory, the Pullman town, and the Pullman State Historic Site. Visitors to the monument can learn about the history of Pullman and the significance of the strike.
George Pullman was a complex figure. He was a visionary businessman who made a fortune in the railroad industry. However, he was also a ruthless employer who was willing to use violence to break a strike. The Pullman National Monument tells the story of Pullman's life and the legacy of his company.
