Sarah is a young woman growing up in the American South during the 1960s. She is a bright and curious girl, but she is also shy and insecure. Sarah's life is turned upside down when her father loses his job and the family is forced to move to a small town. Sarah struggles to adjust to her new life, but she eventually finds solace in the local library. It is there that she meets a group of friends who share her love of books and learning. Together, they form a bond that will last a lifetime.
As Sarah grows older, she becomes increasingly aware of the social injustices that exist in the world around her. She is troubled by the racism and discrimination that she sees, and she begins to question her own beliefs. Sarah's journey of self-discovery leads her to become involved in the civil rights movement. She joins a group of students who are working to register black voters in the South. Sarah's work is dangerous, but she is determined to make a difference in the world.
