The Early Years

Nathan Burkan was born in 1891 to Russian immigrant parents. He grew up in New York City and attended New York University School of Law. After graduating, he served in the U.S. Army during World War I.

After the war, Burkan returned to New York and began his legal career. He quickly made a name for himself as a brilliant and innovative lawyer. In 1921, he founded his own law firm, Burkan & Wolinsky. The firm went on to become one of the most prestigious entertainment law firms in the world.

The Birth of Copyright Law

One of Burkan's most important contributions to American popular culture was his work on copyright law. In the early 20th century, copyright law was still in its infancy. Burkan played a key role in developing and shaping the law.

In 1920, Burkan successfully defended the copyright of the song "Yes! We Have No Bananas." This case helped to establish the principle of copyright protection for popular songs.

In 1923, Burkan helped to draft the Copyright Act of 1924. This landmark legislation established the basic framework for copyright law in the United States. The Copyright Act of 1924 has been amended several times over the years, but it remains the foundation of copyright law in the United States today.

Hollywood's Legal Guru

Burkan was also a close advisor to many of Hollywood's biggest stars and studios. He represented some of the most famous names in entertainment, including Charlie Chaplin, Mary Pickford, and Walt Disney.

Burkan helped to negotiate some of the most important contracts in Hollywood history. He also played a key role in resolving some of the most bitter disputes in the industry.

A Legacy of Leadership

Nathan Burkan died in 1962 at the age of 71. He left behind a legacy of leadership and innovation in the field of entertainment law.

Burkan's work helped to shape the legal and cultural landscape of American popular culture. His contributions to copyright law and his role as a trusted advisor to Hollywood's elite made him one of the most influential figures in the history of American entertainment.
